Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School

Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School
Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School is not your typical dojo.  Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School is a place to learn, without the fetters of the ultra-traditional martial arts gym.  Many of these older gyms have a rigid adherence to techniques and philosophies that leave much to be desired.  For most of my life I viewed these gyms with ambivalence.  They were places I viewed as silly.  The arts they taught were odd and ineffective.  Martial Arts are supposed to teach self-defense and discipline, but so often these typical schools came up short.  Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School changed by perspective completely.  I found a place that delivered on the promise of Martial Arts.

Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School offers classes in Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Boxing.  All of these arts are amazing for self-defense.  Muay Thai and boxing are the best striking arts there are.  To see a boxer jabbing or dodging a punch is to see one of the most simple and brilliant offensive and defensive striking styles.  When a Muay Thai practitioner makes use of the expansive arsenal at their disposal or clinch their opponent, you see the most devastating strikes around.  Wrestling and Judo have take downs and control that no other art offers.  A good wrestler or Judoka can take the fight where they wish.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers so many submissions and positions on the ground.  To go to the mat with a BJJ blackbelt is to be in constant danger.  All these arts are availible at Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School.

Many other gyms only offer one discipline or offer more than one but with less qualified instructors.  The teachers at Poughkeepsie Martial Arts School have all been practicing their art for years before they start to teach.  They have all tested themselves in competitions as well.  In addition to this they all know how to instruct.  It is one thing to know how to do something, it is something different entirely to know how to teach that something.  Many of our instructors still take classes and are students themselves.  There is something very humble and honest about someone who has attained a high level of proficiency in one art and still goes out to learn another.
